Tips on Writing Your First eBook - Why You Should Base Your Target Reader on a Friend

Expert Author Glen Ford

One of the things that every writer of eBooks needs is a target reader. After all, this individual is going to be the perfect reader for you. But more than that everything you do -- your writing itself, your marketing -- everything is going to be targeted at your target reader. They are going to be the source of your focus. They are going to be the person you are motivating. They are going to be the person you are talking to.

But how do you create them? After all they are a fake person. They come out of your imagination and knowledge of people in general.

And frankly, they are too important to make a mistake with. So how do you create a target reader without making a mistake?

The first answer, of course, is to start from a form. A form will give you a structure to build your target reader around. A form will give you the information you need to construct in order to build up a picture of your new friend. And most of all, a form is just easier and faster than trying to write a profile from scratch.

But that's not the sole answer. The other answer is to create your first few target readers based on a friend. That sounds easy. Simple advice to give and simple advice to follow.

But why? What makes it good advice?

First off, basing it on a friend helps you to fill out the form quickly. You won't have to think about most of the fields -- which quite frankly aren't that important. They are needed in order for you to understand your target reader. Those fields are needed to help you picture them. Those fields are needed to picture your new friend. In short, those fields complete the picture. But they won't affect your targeting.

Secondly, your target reader needs to be logically constructed. Their problem needs to develop out of who they are and what motivates them. Their needs need to develop out of the conditions they are in. Their motivations need to grow out of their needs. It does no good to create a person who will buy your product strictly because you want them to. The person you create has to buy your product because they recognize that they need it. This can be very difficult to create on your own. You may find yourself creating characteristics out of whole cloth just to create a result. And no one develops that way. By starting from a real person, you are more likely to create a need that makes sense within their own pseudo-life.

And third, sometimes, friendship just doesn't make sense. It's a complex relationship. And it often springs from a complex cause. And sometimes it comes about despite major differences and reason that it shouldn't happen. And only a real friendship can help you create that in your target reader's profile.
