As you suspect that your loved one is in depression, certainly you want to help in recovering from the illness. Despite that fact, to help someone in depression is surely not an easy task.
You have to ascertain whether your thought is correct or not, and to do that, you will need a competent person to confirm it, such as a psychologist or a psychiatrist. To avoid any resistance from that person to have his condition diagnosed, then it would be better if you arrange or suggest a regular general checkup to your family doctor.
Offer to go with your loved on to the doctor. It is good if you are able to know what is the doctor's opinion, the doctor's suggestion, and the problems that need to be resolved with your help. This will make a faster progress towards recovery in the process.
Although your family doctor is not a psychologist/psychiatrist, she would at least be able to tell whether the suspicion is false or there are some symptoms of depression and therefore need to be confirmed by a psychiatrist. If it is the latter, then your doctor will be able to refer to a psychiatrist/psychologist.
Try to have a talk with your loved one frequently, without being too pushy, and always be ready around your loved one to be his comrade in the battle against the depression. By being able to talk, we hope that your loved one might be able to spill out anything that has been burdening him for so long. By relieving such a burden, your loved one will be more able to cope with the depression and getting better.
In the process of eliminating the depression, always try to show your loved one, your unconditional love and support. Be compassionate and always patient in dealing with the bad mood and negativity as a result of the depression. Frequently telling positive suggestive words such as "You are not alone, I will help you through this," or "Just tell me if there is anything that I can do to help you," or "I care about you, so let me be with you through all of this," will eventually create a positive effect on your loved one, in response to the negativity caused by the depression.
Set aside your ego for a moment, and always be patient. Show that you care and will be there to help, and don't do anything that might cause your loved one to withdraw further from any interaction with you and other people because loneliness will give a way for the depression to get deeper.
