Tips and Tricks For Removing Stains From Cloth Diapers

Keeping our stash sparkling clean seems to be a top priority for almost all cloth diapering Mamas. We dunk, and spritz, and sun, and scrub, and soak all in the name of a clean canvas for our little cherubs to poop on- beginning the cycle all over again. Every now and again, though, we come across a stain that just cannot be conquered bringing us to our knees and ruing the day we ever let our little darlings eat a truck load of beets. Don't you fret, you stain fighting warriors! With a few tricks and a little know how, you can banish almost any stain.

We all know the magical powers of sunning your diapers. A wet diaper and a little lemon juice laid in the sun is a magical thing. Decimated diapers are brought back to life in just a matter of hours. Another method of stain removal is to take your lemon juice and make a thick paste using borax. Slather this salve on your stains and let it sit for a few hours. Throw those dirty dipes in the wash and those stains will be running for the hills. Make sure to rinse your diapers well, as left over lemon juice can irritate little bums. If you don't have lemon juice or borax, you can make a paste out of your Cloth Diaper Safe Detergent and water and follow the same steps.

Oxygen bleaches are fabulous for stain removal and sanitizing diapers. A solid form of hydrogen peroxide, Oxygen Bleach can help your diapers stay clean and stink- free. Lots of mamas ask if this is safe for cloth diapers. Most- if not all - cloth diaper safe detergents contain an oxygen bleach ( sodium percarbonate). Fill your washer with hot water and throw in a few tablespoons of your oxygen bleach. Let your diapers hang out in the washer for a few hours and then wash as you normally would!

Fels-Naptha soap can be another weapon in your arsenal. This soap is specifically designed for laundry use and can be awesome at getting out particularly stubborn stains. Though I wouldn't recommend using Fels-Naptha in your regular cloth diaper washing routine, it is great for the occasional battle. Take your bar of soap and rub it vigorously into your stains. You can even use an old tooth brush if you need a little more scrubbing oomph. Wash your diapers in hot water and rinse a few extra times to make sure all that soapy goodness is gone.

When all else fails in the war against stains just remember -even though we paid a lot of money for our stash and want our precious little snowflakes to have a sparkly clean diaper, poop happens.
