Vacuum cleaning is a convenient and simple way to remove dirt on the floor of your house. It works most efficiently on carpets. It can be quite difficult to get rid of hairs and dust from carpet fibers if you use a broom.
The first thing to do is to ensure that your vacuum cleaner has been emptied and that the suction power is functioning correctly. Take a quick tour around the house and clear away clutter. Pick up anything that your vacuum will have a problem sucking up. This includes things like leaves that may have been blown into the house or fallen from a house plant. Small toys, rubber bands, paper clips, anything that you can see should also be removed.
If you have rugs on the floors, shake them outside and fold them neatly. If you own a hand carpet sweeper, it may be a good idea to go over the carpet with it. This should pick up any debris on the carpet.
Use a dust rag to run along the baseboards where the dust collects. Spray the rag with anti-static spray before you start. Most vacuum cleaners will not go to the edges of the room where the wall meets the floor. Sweep that section well with a stiff broom before you start vacuuming.
Start with the bathrooms. Shut the door as this will enable you to get a better view of what you have and have not done. Do the furniture and the drapes next. Move the furniture like small tables and chairs into a particular spot. Try to reach as far as possible under couches, beds and dressers.
Replace the furniture and start the process from the corner which is furthest from the door. Work towards the door with even, gliding strokes. When you look back on the vacuum cleaning that you've done, you should not see any footprints.
