Keyword rules are essential to get your site recognised by the search engines, but it is not that simple, as the search engines do not have a hard and fast set of rules that govern them all.
Many search engine spiders index the full text of every page, which means that you need to put your keywords throughout your text.
Make sure your pages are full of keywords, but do not make your pages simply lists of keywords. Most directories rank sites on the quality of the content and there does seem to be an unwritten rule that pages need to have at least one hundred and fifty words to qualify for a good ranking. While you are creating your pages you need to keep the following concepts in mind. The prominence of your keywords is essential. The top of each page in the header is the best place to put your keywords. The closer to the top of the page the better or at the start of each sentence.
Some search engines also state that the bottom of each page should contain your main keywords as well. Make sure to link your main keywords to other pages of information or to that page directly.
Some search engines look at the proximity of your keywords and the rule seems to be that the closer your keywords are together the higher your page will rank. This means that your sentences need to be clear, concise and ten to fifteen words in length.
Keyword density is the number of keywords you have in relation to the other text in your page. The higher the the percentage of keywords the better. Search engines ignore the link words such as a, is and excessive use of these will bring your keyword density down.
Try and keep within these few guidelines and your pages will be picked up better by the search engines.
