Web pages are evaluated through two things, its content and its layout. Although esthetics alone cannot ensure the success of your site, content is really important. The following ere some tips in effective web layouts.
Designing a web page doesn't happen a single time only. It has to be dynamic, changing with the season. Then there is also the advancing of technology, sometimes they create new codes for new layouts.
Keeping you web layout simple makes it more user-friendly. Complicated navigation buttons and links use complicated scripting. And sometimes these complications are not compatible with other browsers. So, imagine what would happen if the user would see a warning that says that the browser is not compatible with the page. Do you think the user would still go to lengths of downloading and installing a compatible browser? Another problem is search engines wouldn't index your site if the navigation is complicated. Unless your site is about photography, lessen the use of high resolution pictures which take a long time to load. You can instead use smaller icons to attract the user's attention.
Make sure your text can be deciphered. The font size used should be 11 to 12 pixels which is the standard. The typeface should also be simple and readable like Arial, Tahoma, or Verdana. Stay away from fancy and dirty fonts. You should leave the use of these fonts to graphic artists. Suitable spacing between the lines such as 12 pixels or more should be used.
The dimensions of the web page should be controlled. The top websites limit the height and width of their pages to make the main content viewable within the top 600 x 600 area without the use of the scroll. Make sure the settings expand and contract with the changes in the window size of the browser to avoid a horizontal scrollbar. The height of the page shouldn't be more than four scroll lengths. If you need to add more content throw in a new page. Don't forget a navigational link the next page and back. In this way, page views for your site will be added as well as more advertising space.
The size of the web page file is determined by the total size of text, images, and their supporting files which includes java script, flash, etc. All of these are what a user downloads from the server in order to view your site. So it is imperative that you keep the loading time of your site to a minimum. This is where you have to trade off between an esthetically satisfying page and a faster loading one. Statistics tell us that a visitor will choose to leave your site if the loading time takes more than 8 seconds.
