Did you ever wonder why walking into some rooms make you feel alive and ready to tackle the world? While other rooms make you feel down and uninspired? The change in mood or feelings happens because of color, different colors bring out different emotions. Color effects us in many ways, most often without us even understanding how. Next time you pick out a paint color; think about how it makes you feel.
Which colors shake up the world? Vivid colors like, red, orange, yellow, and sometimes green. Did you notice something about all of them? They are all warm colors, which simply mean that they pop out, move forward. They are often used in dining rooms, gambling casinos, restaurants, and kids play areas. These hues catch the eye, if you have something that you want to "pop" use a warm color.
Cool colors like, purple, pink, blue and again green are soothing they recede. If you want something in the background these are the colors you use. They are more calming in nature and are often used in bedrooms, hospitals and doctors' offices.
Color brings out specific feelings. Green makes people feel secure, calm and confident...good for encouraging you to spend money. Blue is good if you need trust, security or safety. Young women like pink because it is dreamy and romantic. Red is for people who take risks, it promotes high energy. Orange gets you to take action. Yellow is used when you want someone to have fun, it is cheerful and optimistic. Brown eases stress, makes you feel secure and less tired. Black promotes the feeling of spending money, luxury, wealthy and power.
In design principles we know that the eye goes to color, and that color moves your attention around the room. Carefully placed color can make rooms feel larger or smaller. Ceilings will feel taller or shorter; walls can seem further away or closer. A comment I often hear is, "The room seems so much bigger". That is what happens with carefully placed color.
Painting your favorite color can result in a very stressful room. Why? Hot pink on every wall can overwhelm the senses and cause a feeling of tension. But hot pink used as an accent wall or in accents around the room will give you great joy. So be careful where and how much of that "special" color you use.
Carefully think about how a color makes you feel. Dark green can make you feel closed in, but green with yellow becomes a moss green, which can be very soothing and opens up your space. See the colors as an extension of your feelings, always ask, "How do I want to feel in my room, and does this color make me feel like that way"?
