Time Management Tips for Travelers

Expert Author Mary Segers

The Hard Way

Most of what I'm about to share with you I know because I've learned it that way... the hard way.

For many years I traveled 16 hours round trip every other weekend to help care for my aging Grandparents. I would clean ears, clip toenails, grocery shop, and wax floors... among many other things.

Over time I learned that there are things that absolutely must be done before any trip...some for safety and some just for comfort. (I say Just like it's a minor thing but it's not...comfort is very important...especially if the trip is to be a long one.)

So, here are some time management tips for travelers that will cover both of these areas...safety and comfort.

Safety First...

The biggest thing, to me, would be to make sure that your tires and fluid levels are good. I seem to remember 20 or so years ago having a flat tire on the side of the interstate when we'd only been gone for less than 2 hours. If we'd done a general checkup we could have saved ourselves that trouble.

You can look at your tires and tell if they need replaced or repaired or if they look pretty good. If you can't then go to a tire store and ask them. Most...probably...99.9% won't lie in order to sell you tires and they'll probably be glad to teach you what to look for.

Don't forget, an oil change and battery check could be well worth the amount spent.

Also, it may be a good idea to take care of any maintenance items that are coming due soon. A broken serpentine belt which lands you on the side of the road could be costly...not only in money but in time too.

Comfort...

Is not just a physical thing. Have you ever said, "Oh my gosh, after being gone so long I'm going to hate to face...." You can garner emotional comfort from freeing yourself from some worries. For instance, most people can remember things such as taking care of pets but do you remember the tasks that also need taken care of if you're going to be gone for any amount of time (i.e., several days) such as:

· Refrigerator Cleaned Out-It only took me one time of coming home to food growing food to remember this little gem. There are few things as bad as coming home to things growing in your fridge except those growing on your clothes which leads us to...

· Clothes Put Up (not in the dryer and definitely not left in washer)-This also makes it to where you have one less chore to do upon returning home exhausted.

· Plants Watered-You do, after all, want these growing.

One of my favorite "Must Do's" before a trip is to clean the car from top to bottom and inside and out...even spot cleaning the carpet. I splurge and get some new car fragrances.

I hope you can see how these time management tips for travelers will help you have a safe trip. They will also save you time and positively impact your emotional and physical comfort.
