Three Reasons You Should Be Marketing Locally Rather Than Globally

Expert Author Thom Lancaster

As an online marketer, you might be thinking that your marketplace is the whole wide world. In many ways that's correct. The beauty of the Internet is that your customers can come from anywhere. But, you may be missing out on a highly viable resource that's sat at your feet. The local market. In this article I'm going to present three valuable reasons to you why you should be marketing at the local level.

I'm going to start with what I consider to be probably the most important reason. It's the amount of money you can make. If you target people who are advertising locally, they are used to spending money on advertising. To present a commercial on the TV, radio or a newspaper is definitely not cheap. If you can offer them an online alternative, at a bargain price compared to what they would usually do, you are offering them a good deal. That way, you can tap into this vibrant market.

Next, you have a huge advantage with search engine optimisation when you are advertising to a local market. This means that you can rank for keywords which might otherwise have been impossible. For instance, consider a competitive search term like Florist. It would be very difficult to rank for this term on a global scale. But, now imagine the local market. These are people who are keen to get flowers immediately and they want to know the address of a supplier in their own home area. It is much easier to rank for the term Florist with the local vicinity added on to it.

A final reason for promoting locally is when you are aiming to get paid traffic. You are able to bid on keywords that are much more specific, or localised. This means that you are not wasting money on targeting people who are outside the area, or have no intention of buying. Further, you can increase your quality scores. By doing this, you can get very cost effective traffic.

Local marketing need not be difficult, even if you've not done it before. By aiming at a smaller subset of a large and global market, you can make much more money. I'm going to share with you one final secret. You don't just have to advertise in your own local market. You can choose any local market in the world to go after. The global reach of the internet makes this possible. By advertising to multiple local markets you can really dominate the search engines and explode your online business.
