Those Problem Veggies

Dennis the Menace was famed for his dislike of vegetables, amongst other little boy things. In fact, many children don't like them, especially if they have a strong flavor. Foods like broccoli and spinach are high on the "unfavored" list for that reason. However, there are times when we adults can have problems with veggies, even if we *do* like them. They can cause uncomfortable conditions and pose serious health threats in the right circumstances.

Asparagus: This delicious vegetable has one problem for gout sufferers. It's got purine in it, which in turn is broken down into uric acid as a waste product. It is unwise to eat many servings of asparagus, let it trigger a flare up. There is a rumor that asparagus can be part of a plan to get rid of kidney stones. Supposedly you can drink a popular soda pop along with eating asparagus and it will get rid of them. I have seen many websites proposing this as a cure, but none that can back it up with medical reasoning. If you have a kidney stone, best leave the treatment to the doctor until more information comes out.

Avocado: This is actually a fruit, but it is used in savory rather than sweet situations. It is high in monounsaturated fat, which would ordinarily be a good thing if you have kidney disease. Unfortunately, it is also high in potassium, which is not good for that problem. The good news is that you can eat them if you have kidney stones, as they may help prevent recurrence.

Beans: You may remember a comical rhyme about this "musical fruit," and it can be so. Flatulence (better known as gas) can result from eating beans. It may be somewhat comical to a few, but it can cause some physical pain to go along with the embarrassment. Also, beans may trigger gout attacks and should be avoided by kidney patients due to the protein/purine content.

Hot Peppers: If you've ever had a bout of unexplained diarrhea, search your memory and see if there were any hot peppers in your last two or three meals...that would be the explanation. This doesn't happen to everyone, but it is a possibility. One other problem can result from eating these, and it is best told by my foster brother: "You go into the bathroom laughing and you come out crying." They can be somewhat painful to...er...pass.

Potatoes: Notwithstanding the high Vitamin C count, potatoes can be problematic for diabetics. They contain a lot of starch, which can cause elevated blood sugar counts if a lot are consumed.

Spinach: I can tell you from personal experience that passing a kidney stone is an unpleasant experience. Never having another one is high on my "to do" list. If you do pass one, find out what it is made up of, as there are several kinds. If it is made from calcium oxalate, you're going to want to pass on the spinach, as it is high in that constituent.

It's kind of a shame that once we learn to enjoy our vegetables some of them have to go on the "forbidden" list. To make sure that you must skip the veggie, ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist. He or she can give you a list of the things you can and cannot eat if you want to stay healthy.
