Things to Know About Wood Stove Inserts & Pellet Stove Inserts

How do you as a homeowner start to become more energy independent? This is a question many homeowners are asking as they see their utility bill rise every winter. The answer is very easy; make your heating source more efficient. The better you can make your heating source work for you the more money you keep in your pocket. Using wood stove inserts or pellet stove inserts is a great way to do this if you have a fireplace.

When you contemplate using an insert there are some things you should know that will help to make this decision a no brainer for you. First start with the fact they are relatively inexpensive. You can purchase a complete set for a relatively low cost and once you have installed your insert it will begin to immediately pay for itself with lower utility bills. This is because these inserts help your fireplace to heat at higher temperatures with less logs, gas or pellets.

Wood stove inserts and pellet stove inserts also help you to keep a set temperature in a room instead of a constant fluctuation. For example, with a standard wood burning fireplace every time you add a log you increase the fuel the fire has so you increase the temperature. As the fire burns down and there is less wood the room now begins to cool. With either the wood or pellet insert you have ways to regulate the temperature with thermostats.

Both of these inserts are also easy for a homeowner to install. They are both inserted into an already existing fire place. You just need to measure the inside and outside dimension and choose one that will fit properly. Once you have the right sizes these inserts basically slip right into place but if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself you can always hire a professional installer.

Another component you should also look at when you are considering an insert is the firebox. This is the area where the fire burns. You want to make sure that it is going to be easy to clean. Many manufacturers have designed the firebox so that it very simple to clean. Also make sure that the insert you are looking at will adequately heat the room. All of the wood stove inserts and the pellet stove inserts will tell you the amount of square feet you can expect to heat with each model.

A few other things you should know before you buy are the burn rate per model. This is simply how fast the energy source in the insert will burn. This information lets you know how often you are going to need to add wood or pellets to the insert. You can also decide what types of options you want with these inserts. For example some of the control panels for the inserts can be operated with a remote. Some are fancier with gold trim around the doors. If you live in a mobile home make sure any model you choose is considered safe for your home.

Upgrading your fireplace with wood stove inserts or pellet stove inserts is a great way for you to become more energy independent. You can now heat your home and keep more money in your pocket.
