The ability to harness and distribute electrical current to our homes is an amazing feat. Gone are the days where candles and lamps are our main source of light and here are the days where we simply touch a switch and, or clap our hands and our homes are flooded with light.
Additionally, it has made it possible for use to have a refrigerator or two, DVD players, electrical kettles and the list goes on. In many countries, electricity is a part of their lives, whereas power outage is not a part of it, indeed, it is an intrusion. On the other hand, in many other countries power outage or shortage is the norm, while electricity is a welcome intrusion.
In either cases though, if we are using this invention, there are several things that we can do when there is a power shortage.
Check Around
When the lights and appliances within our home suddenly shuts down, we can look through the window etc, to see if our neighbors' lights are on or off. If theirs are on, then check the circuit breaker, it might have shut down because of a power overload.
Turn on Radio
When it is established that it is a public outage, turn on a battery operated radio to a news channel, the news may mention the outage and other important news.
Don't Open Refrigerator
Only open the fridge or freezer when it is absolutely necessary, so as to keep out room temperature air and to keep in the cold air that is needed to keep the food fresh, until power is up again.
Turn Off Appliances
Turn off all appliances, especially the ones that were in use at the time of the shortage, so as to keep them from overloading, when it comes on again.
Turn On Light
Put on or leave on two light switches, one for the inside and one for the outside. Obviously, the inside one is to let us know when the power is again available and the outside one is to let our neighbors know.
Candles
Keep papers, curtains, flowers etc., and especially children from coming into contact with the flames from the candle.
