History
History buffs will get a kick out of the 200 and more national historic sites that are littered throughout the great state. Everything from battlefields from the American Revolution to the inauguration of both presidents George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt will only be the tip of the iceberg for knowledge.
There are also sites of cultural significance, such as the birth places of Susan B Anthony, Teddy Roosevelt, and Franklin D Roosevelt to the classic naval ships of the day which sailed the waters of the Hudson and East Rivers.
The Arts
Anyone who is an artist, musician, or actor will kick their fix while in the state of New York. New York City, otherwise known as the Big Apple, plays host to many of the popular venues of entertainment. Categorized as the second entertainment mecca (after Hollywood), NYC holds the famed Broadway theater areas, where many famous plays and musicals have run or premiered.
Musicians of all types will enjoy the performing arts plaza that is Lincoln Center; jazz players will learn about how jazz got a popular start in NYC, while enjoying some performances. The Metropolitan Philharmonic and Opera houses will treat those classical lovers, while hip hop historians can learn more about the movement that began here.
Aspiring authors and writers can visit and learn more about the Harlem Renaissance that catapulted a number of African-American artists to prominence, while visual artists can stroll through the many art galleries and museums.
And of course, TV and movie fans can get their backstage behind the scenes look at the NBC Studio lot.
Attractions
If history and the arts aren't your cup of tea, why not head out for a lovely stroll in one of the 28,000 acres of recreational park areas. Central Park, which is the most popular within Manhattan, plays host to the Central Park Zoo, as well as the Guggenheim and Museum of Art or you can visit Prospect Park in Brooklyn or Flushing Meadows within Queens.
If that doesn't hold you, how about window shopping? Many big name stores are located within New York and if you happen to visit during the winter and Christmas seasons, you can enjoy many of the elaborate displays that are put on for the person on the street.
