Things Medical Billing School Will Teach You in Classes and What You Can Expect From It's Curriculum

These days it seems that some of the fastest growing job opportunities are in careers that are related to the health industry. This doesn't mean doctors necessarily, or professions that require a lot of training in order to get started. You don't even have to deal with blood and sick patients in order to take advantage of this trend. If you attend medical billing school you will be able to become a medical biller in one to two years, depending on the program of study that you choose.

There are options for attending medical billing school online or in the classroom, and you can choose between one year programs that result in a medical billing certificate or two year associates degree programs. The shorter certificate programs will teach you the basics that you need to know, while the longer programs will give you a bit more training as well as more practical experience.

What will you learn in your medical billing class? Well, you will learn about insurance, medical billing, and medical bookkeeping, as well as the terms that are commonly used during medical coding (such as the 5 digit Current Procedure Terminology [CPT-4] codes and the ICD-9 numerical codes used for diagnosis information), diagnostics, and procedures. It is important that you understand all the medical terms that doctors use to ensure that the proper codes are chosen for the procedures performed and diagnosis for each patient. You will also learn a bit about medical law and insurance as well. Those who opt for the two year program will get more of a core health science education, as well as classes on medical ethics. It is also important to get some practice with interviewing and documenting cases.

Once you have finished your program at a medical billing school, you will be ready to get a job. Medical billers typically work in offices either in hospitals, doctor's offices, or in contract billing companies. You can even work freelance, but this is usually easier to do once you have a bit more experience, since hospitals and offices might be reluctant to hire someone who is just getting started.

One of the things that might give you an advantage in getting a job is getting certified. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) offers a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification, as well as various coding certifications. These require you to have attended an accredited training program and pass an exam.
