Binaural beats are a modern technology based on principles discovered early in the 19th century. Theta binaural audio sessions operate mainly in the 5-8 Hz range and can be used to lead the brain into a deep meditative state. Theta binaural beats programs can be used either alone or in conjunction with your favorite conventional meditation techniques.
Our minds operate at differing speeds or "frequencies". As common sense would tell us, our mind runs at higher frequencies when it is more active and lower frequencies when it is relaxed or calm. The four commonly recognized cerebral frequency ranges are beta, alpha, theta and delta.
Our brains are in the high-speed beta range (15-39 Hz) when we are actively using our brains for complex thinking tasks such as reading, problem-solving or performing complex logic. When the dominant frequency is in the alpha range (9-14 Hz), we feel calm, centered and focused. We may even be in a light meditative state of mind. When our brain is operating in the range of 5-8 Hz, our brains are operating at an extremely "slowed down" level. We have entered the theta zone - a range conducive to deep physical and mental relaxation states. This state is useful for deep meditation, creativity tasks and even certain sleep states. Delta (1-4 Hz) is the slowest range in which our brain operates. This range is associated with deep sleep, unconsciousness and some very, very deep relaxation states.
Brain function researchers have discovered long ago that the theta brainwave frequency range is the zone that the brain naturally operates in when it has been placed into a state of deep meditation. Thus, entering a deep meditative state automatically places the brain into the theta operating range. Since theta brainwave frequencies are inextricably tied together with a state of deep meditation, it makes sense that the reverse is also true: leading the brain into the theta frequency operating range will automatically place the brain in a deep meditative state.
This is the principle behind theta binaural audio programs. Through a scientific principle called entrainment, binaural programs gently lead our brains to a desired frequency. By applying two slightly-differing audio tones to each of our two ears, we cause our brain to internally create a third tone (sometimes called a binaural beat frequency). As you would suspect, theta binaural beats programs are designed to guide the brain to a theta frequency range.
Theta binaural beats audio programs can be a great aid to our meditation practice whether used alone or with other meditation methods. Of course we must do our part. Binaural beats audio sessions will not work for us if we do not allow them to. However, if we make an effort to "cooperate" with the technology we will find that it will cooperate with us by allowing us to easily place our brains in the proper state of consciousness that we require for deep, relaxed meditation.
