It goes without saying that you need to exercise extra precaution in everything you do when you are pregnant. While this is the time to indulge in all those food cravings without being unduly concerned about putting on excess weight, you may want to take a moment to consider the ramifications of indulging in too many pastries and other carbohydrate-rich foods. For one thing, they could lead to the onset of hypoglycemia or diabetes.

It is admittedly hard when you are pregnant and experiencing food cravings and are then told to take it easy and avoid eating foods that are high in glucose. When you are pregnant it is important to undergo routine monthly check-ups to determine the presence of hypoglycemia. If your blood glucose levels seem to be rising and are higher than normal, your obstetrician will advise you to lower those levels by watching what you eat. This takes on special importance during the first four months of your baby's growth and development. If your obstetrician detects the presence of hypoglycemia, you will have to get it treated right away without any delay. Be sure to keep your doctor informed if you are allergic to insulin.

So what exactly is hypoglycemia? It is essentially a pathological condition wherein the sugar level of the blood is extremely low. This is sometimes caused due to the excessive production of insulin by the pancreas. Some of the causes of hypoglycemia include poor dietary habits, stress, liver dysfunction, presence of tumors in the pancreas, poorly functioning pancreas and pregnancy.

The symptoms of this condition could range from dizziness, perspiration and shakiness to tingling sensation in the extremities or feeling faint and disoriented. Do remember that if you are asked to take insulin injections for your conditions, you would require to always have some form of candy or some source of carbohydrates handy with you wherever you may be; whether at work or at home or in the car. Glucose tablets or glucose gel are ideal for this purpose.

Though you do not need to go into panic mode, you should be cautious if hypoglycemia is detected when you are pregnant. Consult a good dietician or nutritionist and ascertain the optimum sugar levels for you. Make sure your regularly monitor your level of blood glucose. While you could administer the necessary insulin injections yourself, educate yourself on the techniques and the various adjustments in doses if necessary. Stay physically active. Always get your Obstetrician's advice before you embark upon anything new when you are pregnant.

While there is no overwhelming evidence about hypoglycemia being a threat to your pregnancy, it can and does cause other related problems. You may find that it is impossible to prevent hypoglycemia entirely, but it can be controlled though stringent diabetes management measures. If you have been diagnosed as hypoglycemic while you are pregnant, it may also be advisable to make sure that somebody else around you knows how to administer the injections in case the need arises.
