The Yin and Yang Principle and Friction

Two principles of the Chinese classic philosophy that symbolize the equilibrium of natural processes are Yin, the female principle, and Yang, the male principle. Everything has it opposite - although this is never absolute, only comparative. No one thing is completely Yin or completely Yang. Each contains the seed of the opposite. For example, winter can turn into summer; "what goes up must come down".

Case I:

Positive Friction

During the lightning advance in 1941/42 of the German Africa corps towards the Egyptian Delta of the Nile it often happened that Rommel faced insurmountable logistical problems. Often he was on the verge of breaking off his march towards the Nile because he had no supplies. However several times it "happened" that his troops would unexpectedly come across a hidden British Army dump and such an unexpected piece of good fortune meant that he could resume his march. He experienced "positive friction".

With friction we usually think of coincidental negative events. Apart from negative incidents, unexpected positive events might also happen which create new chances. This we call 'positive friction' (or happiness). Positive friction is when a competitor introduces an "improved" product that appears to be a flop, like Persil Power (see case below). The result is that one is unexpectedly freed from a competitor. The Yin & Yang principle demands flexibility and resolution to react quickly to unexpected good fortune.

Case II:

Persil Power

Unilever in 1988 launched Persil Power in Britain as a washing powder containing a manganese "accelerator" that removed stains at lower temperatures. Proctor & Gamble, the Anglo-Dutch firm's biggest rival, conducted research that showed that far from cleaning favourite garments, the new powder rotted clothing away. A war of words ensued in the press and trough advertising but Unilever was forced to withdraw Persil Power. A very effective presentation technique to tackle the competition.
