The Unforgiving Pain of an Earache Or Ear Infection

Expert Author Karen May Jones

Got an earache in the house? Don't brush it off as being whimpy and whiney. Is there a fever along with it? uh oh! Maybe a doctor needs to check for infection brought on by virus or bacteria. Perhaps there's a need for treating it with some prescription medication to help it run its course.

No fever? That's good news, but that doesn't do much to sway the pain - so, warm compresses and pain reliever from over the counter (OTC) is the solution.

What did my doctor tell me about my child's recent ear "ache"? No infection present, however, he said I should keep an eye on the situation in case it gets worse.

His remedy? Tylenol or generic equivalent and heat. Not a heating pad! You don't want to roast your child's face and brain. A nice hot towel or a sock filled with raw dry rice (you can microwave the rice filled sock for several minutes to get it toasty warm).

Don't be surprised if your doctor checks the throat or does a swab of the throat when he is checking out the earache symptoms. Often times a throat infection can radiate up into the areas around the ears. It's good to check for this while in the office. That will be at his discretion based on what he sees in and around the ears, tonsils, and uvula.

No matter if there is an infection or just an irritation of the ears, the best medicine is heat and OTC pain relievers - and waiting time.
