There are definitely many times where you feel like plucking a colleagues eyes out, yelling back at an obnoxious boss, writing a strongly worded email to lay your point across, using swear words because you've been pushed to the wall, the list goes on and on. Every day we are confronted with unsavoury situations at work which make us angry and induce some form of reaction.
Anger results when you lose control of your emotions. However, the corporate environment isn't very forgiving of employees who haven't learnt to curtail their anger. Working with people is one of the most difficult things to do and yet we must.
These easy steps will help you manage your fiery moments at work.
• Breathe- This is often the most popular advice to be given to any one, not just employees who are angry. Resist the urge to yell by simply breathing in and counting to ten or twenty or 100 depending on your anger level.
• Force yourself to respond in a level tone- Do not respond in a high pitched tone.
• Make the other person look bad- If you are being yelled at, don't yell back, instead you may want to experiment looking at the yelling party with an amused look so that passersby will look at him/her like their crazy.
• Silence: Sometimes you don't even need to respond but meet verbal confrontations with silence.
• Discuss in private: If you can, be the bigger person and call the subject of your anger to a small meeting where you tell them what you are holding against them and try to understand them.
• Don't be malicious-Simply put, don't keep malice, if you have anything against any one and its making you angry don't keep it and boil inside. Chances are you are only hurting yourself and the other party doesn't know.
