Conversational hypnosis is a term used to describe a kind of hypnosis that is induced by words and by body language. Conversational Hypnosis is in essence an indirect form of hypnosis that induced by speaking and acting in a certain way.
Conversational hypnosis became well know due to Milton Erickson, a famous psychiatrist who discovered how to hypnotize through the use of words. Richard Bandler and John Grinder codified Milton Erickson's language and they created what they called the "Milton Model".
Rapport must exist for hypnosis to occur.
Rapport is a state of agreement, a state which makes the hypnotized person to feel a strong chemistry with his hypnotist. It is a state where both, the hypnotist and his subject feel that they are in synch.
Rapport is gained though various techniques such as matching and mirroring of the subject behavior, language and beliefs and when it achieved the critical factor are bypassed and the hypnotist has a direct access to his subject's conscious mind.
The Process of hypnotizing indirectly using conversational hypnosis involves 3 stages:
Absorbing attention -
Our attention is normally scattered around various things. In order to hypnotize the hypnotist must first focus his subject's attention. There are various verbal and non verbal techniques for that purpose.
Bypassing the critical factor and reaching subconscious response-
After the subject's attention has been focused the hypnotist start the process of inducing trance by talking in a certain way using an hypnotic language which cause his subject to develop a state of trance.
Applying Suggestion -
After trance has been achieved suggestions the hypnotist will apply his suggestions. Suggestions are directions given by the hypnotist to the subject while he is in trance. Since the subject is in trance those suggestions go directly to his subconscious mind.
