Getting out of credit card debt is not going to be easy and for most people it is going to take a lifestyle change. It is going to take being so tired of the situation that you are willing to go to any length to be able to change your financial outlook. You will not be able to get out of debt doing what you have done in the past. It will take the motivation want to be debt free.

1. Stop using your credit cards. How can you get out of debt, if you continue to charge on your credit cards? If you cannot keep from using your credit cards, cut them up. In the end, you will be glad you went to this length.
2. Take inventory. It is time to find out what you owe. This can be a scary step for many people. When debt first gets out of hand, we tend to be in denial and may throw the bills in a drawer without ever opening them up. It is time to face up to what is there and address it head on. You cannot eliminate your debt, if you do not know what you have.
3. Indentify areas in your spending that can be reduced or eliminated. Most of us have them and many of us could live on a lot less than we do. Keeping a journal or spreadsheet of spending can help identify these areas of excess.
4. Indentify extra income. Do you have a closet full of items with tags? If so, sell them. Sell things of value that are not being used. Could you drive a less expensive car? Could you pick up extra hours at work? These are just a few of the places where you can acquire extra income. Be creative in this step. You could start a business doing something you enjoy that could eventually give you money for wealth building once you credit cards are paid in full.
5. If you are going to follow your own plan for repayment, call your credit card companies and ask to have your interest rates lowered. Every little bit helps and this step can be a big time and money saver.
