Most of us do not like doing exercise, in fact, for many it is a swear word. Yet we all want to feel better and we would like to live a long and prosperous life. The unfortunate thing is that you cannot have one without the other. Exercise is necessary to keep our bodies functioning and to help stave off disease and premature aging. Although we have all heard this before, many of us are not convinced, and all the preaching of the world is not going to change that fact. But how do you convince those who clearly do not like to exercise? The answer lies in illuminating the benefits that exercise has to offer, and not just generalizing about how healthy it is and how you can get a toned body, etc. They need to be told exactly what the benefits are.
Well, what are the benefits of regular exercise? The first true benefit of exercise is lowering of the blood pressure. Did you know that sustained high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, or worse, heart attack and death? Sustained high blood pressure causes damage to the four heart valves. Damaged heart valves can lead to infections such as infective endocarditis, rheumatic fever, and as mentioned before, heart disease. In addition to lowering of blood pressure, regular exercise can strengthen the heart, improve circulation of the blood, as well as improved the oxygenation of blood. This means that blood is moved around the body more efficiently and that there is enough oxygen for organs to perform effectively and burn fuel.
If you are looking for cosmetic benefits, then look no further. Regular exercise definitely makes you look a lot better, thus improving self-esteem. Increasing exercise activity helps to keep the weight down as well as increases muscle strength. However, the best is still to come. Exercise improves your rate of metabolism. This means that your body is able to burn food more quickly, and what this really means to you, is that you will be able to eat slightly more and lose weight at the same time. This can be achieved because there is not enough time for food to be stored as fat, because the body continually needs it for energy. Can you just imagine it? You can eat more without putting on weight. It sounds like a dream come true, and in fact, it is. All one needs, is a little effort.
Exercise also reduces the risks of getting cancer and chronic disease. It is also the best antidepressant available. Did you know that exercising encourages the release of endorphins that help you reach a natural high? So why spend hundreds of dollars on happy pills when exercising can give the same effect, for free?
Unfortunately, there is no pill that has been invented that can simulate the effects of exercise. Until such time that one has been invented, we will have to keep up with our exercise routines if we want to look and feel better, but more importantly, to ensure our health.
One book that I found very interesting and highly recommend is the best selling book, "The 9 Steps to Keep the Doctor Away", which is written by Dr Rashid Buttar. Here you will learn why we need exercise, the different kinds of exercise and how they relate to our bodies. In this book, Dr Buttar explains the chemical reactions that exercise causes in our bodies and how it affects the healing process.
