The Secret of Online Web Marketing Success

It's the end of a web marketing seminar. I'm about to close the question and answer session when a hand goes up at the back of the room.

"OK," I say, "just one more. The last one. Ma'am, what's your question?"

There's a moment's pause, and a small, grandma-type lady gets the mike and says timidly, "It's been a great evening; I came with my son, and I've enjoyed every moment. There's been so much information. But, young man -" I think she means me! - "All this internet marketing stuff. You've been giving facts and information. But take marriage, for instance. There's facts, and there's information. But there are secrets. too! " And she smiled at me, and goes on, "What's the secret? What are the secrets of internet marketing?"

And she sits down.

There is a moment's pause as the rest of the audience got what she said, and then they clap and clap and some one else in the front row says laughingly, "C'mon - what's the secret?"

What can I do? I have to answer.

So I do.

I solemnly tear up my notes in front of everyone (cheers from the audience) and say, "OK - let's go. From the top. Here are the secrets of web marketing success."

I had to just think quick, and just let it out. Say what comes. And this was what I said.

First, the secret of web marketing success is to be the best you possibly can. It's not about huge mailing lists of expensive products. It's about being the best in everything you do. Over deliver. Delight your customer.

Which means becoming an expert in every part of the online marketing process.

Become the best sales page designer you can. Really get to grips with your image software and your web page creation software and, if you have it, your online video software. Don't skim. Learn from forums and become the best squeeze page designer you can be.

Really understand how your autoresponder works and milk every feature that it has. Get to grips with split testing. Dive in at the deep end.

Decide to create your own info product or ebook and choose to make it as good as you possibly can.

Have the courage to follow you hunches. Don't mimic other people. Learn from them, for sure, but then branch out and make your own way along the beach.

Help others.

Because it's by helping others and answering their questions that you really draw from the well of your experience. And you'll discover that you know a lot. An awful lot.

And you'll have the confidence to start building an online business that begins to snowball.

Then you'll realise that the secret you thought you knew has yielded another secret: outsourcing. You'll learn to get others to do much of the work that you did yourself.

And so it goes on. You will enjoy success. You will enjoy having money to spend, to invest, to share, and to donate.

The secret of web marketing success is no secret. It's to do with excellence, outstanding endeavour, and the aspiration to be the best you can.

That's the secret, Ma'am. And - thank you for asking.
