The Risks Behind a Massage

There's no better way to relax than to get a soothing massage. With the release of tension in the muscles and enhanced blood circulation in the veins, a massage as often as possible is definitely the way to go.

However, before one receives massage therapy, it is recommended to look at certain risks that come with it. Depending on the condition of the person, there may be serious complications that may come with the massage.

For example, massage therapy is not recommended for those who suffer deep vein thrombosis. This is a condition where there is a blood clot found in the deep vein. The blood clot causes the veins to swell. It is a condition usually seen in the legs. When pressure is applied on the area, such clot may be dislodged and it may later on block other major passages.

Another case is when the person is currently receiving treatments for a bleeding disorder. One of these drugs includes warfarin.

A person with weakened bones is also not allowed to get massages. The weakened bones may be a result of a condition like osteoporosis or cancer. Most of the massage therapies apply pressure on the body. It can only lead to fracture or it can worsen the condition of the patient.

Open wounds are also issues. The wounds should not be disturbed especially when it is on its healing stage. Added substances such as massage oils and powders may be able to worsen the open wounds when massaged.

Aside from these conditions, there are other conditions that must be considered before massage therapy is started. Pregnancy is one of these conditions. A pregnant woman may have conditions that may worsen if she receives pressure in her body. It is recommended that she consults her doctor first.

There are possible side effects of a massage therapy when the conditions are not consulted by a physician beforehand. Slight side effects include pain and discomfort during and after the massage, swelling of affected areas. There are also instances where the massage strokes are really intense that it could even result in bruising. Some patients also complain of allergic reactions coming from the massage oils. A massage may offer the rejuvenating and relaxing feel. However, it is important to check the condition of the person first before allowing a massage to proceed as it may later on result to unwanted side effects. If you have any questions about massage seek out your doctor before receiving a massage.
