If you have a son or a daughter that wants to get involved in playing ice hockey, or even if you want to play, you may not know where to begin. Well, the first thing you are going to need is to get the right equipment to get started. So, here is some of the essential equipment that you're going to need if you're going to get out there and play on ice.

Skates - Of course one of the essential pieces of ice hockey equipment that you'll need is good skates. After all, without them you'll have a hard time playing. When you're choosing your skates, quality is going to be important. Also, make sure that they are well sharpened before you take them out on the ice for the first time. Usually it's a good rule of thumb to purchase skates that are a bit smaller than the shoe size you normally wear.

Hockey Pants - These pants are essential for you as well, and some of the best ones offer support for the thighs and tailbone as well. You can purchase pants that tie around your waist, or you can go for the ones that have suspenders to hold them up instead, although it's really a matter of preference.

Shin Guards - You'll find that if you're going to play ice hockey, shin guards are going to be important as well. There are two types to choose from. You can go with the ones that require special tape to keep them on, or you can go with shin guards that use Velcro to stay on your legs.

Chest Protector - If you're going to get serious about the game, you'll want to make sure that you get a chest protector that offers padding and support for your chest and shoulders. Make sure you go with great quality so that you are kept safe when you are out there playing.

Mouth Guards - This is one area that you won't want to skimp on when it comes to ice hockey equipment. Mouth guards do offer great protection to your teeth, which is very important, but they also help to protect your brain as well. Make sure that you have the mouth guard custom made so that it fits you just right, and don't go cheap when you're picking out this piece of equipment.

While there is a lot of other equipment out there to purchase, such as jocks, neck guards, helmets, and elbow pads, these are just a few of the essentials you'll want to buy. Make sure you go with quality as well, since you want to be sure that you, or your kids, are totally safe when playing ice hockey.
