One step to gaining good health is finding the best diet for lowering cholesterol. Not going beyond the normal amount of fats and calories will actually lessen the probability of developing life threatening diseases e.g. hypertension, cancer, etc. Aside from exercising regularly, eating the most suited diet is among the sure fire ways to lessen your cholesterol amount.

The so called Step I Diet is one example of an eating plan aimed to decrease calorie intake. This is best for people who are just starting to incorporate dieting into their lives. The main idea in this particular food plan is to see to it that your body's total amount of fat, to be specific, calorie amount, is not more than 30%. Polyunsaturated fat has to be 8-10% in amount, saturated fat has to be lower than 10%, and the good fat, or monounsaturated fat has to have a total percentage of 10 up to 15%. People can determine the percentages by reading the food labels and learn the right serving amount for every type of food to be eaten.

Some people may not experience significant improvement when utilizing the Step I eating plan. If that does not work, try the Step II diet, which is best for people who have been diagnosed with heart disease. The said plan is actually very similar to the first one; however, it is stricter in terms of reducing the intake of fats. In fact, the overall amount of saturated fat a person is allowed to consume should be less than 6%.

If the second plan does not work well, another option is to follow a very low fat eating guide. That guide is the most recommended for those who have extreme heart related diseases, especially for people who may not be getting the maximum results from the Step II plan. A very low fat plan is one that does not allow almost every type of meat and dairy products.

For any diet to work well, people have to first find out the total amount of cholesterol they hold in their bodies. This is a step to setting the right goals and doing everything to meet those goals. A healthier body is one that has a minimal amount of low density lipoprotein or LDL, and a greater amount of high density lipoprotein, or HDL. Both LDL and HDL, however, may be affected by factors such as your medical history, your general health, etc. It is therefore a must to speak with your physician first to be able to obtain the correct figures.

Lowering cholesterol brings about the need to exercise daily and to eat right. Avoiding food or beverage intake that may increase your body's cholesterol level is also advisable. Being able to practice effective stress management may also be a big help as higher levels of stress may also contribute to greater cholesterol amounts in the body. Of course, consulting a health expert should not be forgotten in one's search for the right methods to be healthier.
