The Purpose of Hobbies

Expert Author Michael C Miller

A hobby is an activity in which one indulges simply because one likes to do so. Whether it is pottering about in the garden of taking long walks in the countryside one does it because one is interested in doing it. If it is done to keep someone else happy or for the sole purpose of financial gain it is not a hobby.

The range of hobbies is almost unlimited. Most of us are familiar with the more usual ones. Stamp-collecting, for instance, is most common as is letter-writing. Collecting reptiles or restaurant menus, on the other hand, do not enjoy have the same popularity.

It is not everyone who has a hobby as one individual once revealed that his hobby was not having a hobby. Some people do not find time to indulge in hobbies while some others would like to have a hobby but cannot decide what it should be and lack the necessary initiative to begin a hobby. A lot of people change hobbies frequently- a passion for reading gradually gives way to an interest in photography. Most people, however, seem to remain loyal to their hobbies and retain them throughout their lives.

A hobby is a creative pastime and can be profitable too. It prevents idle minds and besides providing recreation, it is an excellent form of learning. Sewing, knitting and other such hobbies give aesthetic pleasure but can also be a source of earning. Philately can be wonderfully informative.

Hobbies, then, are to be encouraged especially among the young as they have abundant energy and creativity which can be guided into productive and positive channels. By promoting individuality and independence hobbies can help our young to stand on their own feet.
