The Pros and Cons of Earning Money at Home

In today's job market, where unemployment is high, and positions are scarce, you may have considered earning money at home. Before taking the plunge into working from home, you will want to consider all the pros and cons that come with working at home.

First, know that those who are earning money at home have to be self disciplined to work during set times and can become lazy in getting tasks done. Realize that not everyone has the personality to be self motivated and disciplined to work in this type of setting - so it may not be for you.

Here are a couple of the positive aspects of working from home:

No commute time. With gas prices soaring to all time highs, this is a big advantage for many people. It might be an option to telecommute with an employer, particularly if you live a substantial distance from the office. If the job is one that requires a lot of time on the telephone or computer, this is a definite possibility.

Eliminates the need for child care. This is another added expense when you work outside the home. By earning money at home, you'll be able to provide care for your children and still earn a living. Be aware however, that this type of arrangement takes planning and discipline.

Now, to a couple of drawbacks to working from home:

Lack of social interaction during the day. If you are the type of person who needs and thrives on interacting with others, this may not be the right choice for you. Many people also enjoy the "iron sharpens iron" mentality of going into an office with co-workers each day, as it makes them want to work harder.

No true separation from work and home life. It would be easy in this situation for someone to fall into the trap of not having set work hours since they are at home. Many people who work from home have a separate office area with a door, and when the set work hours are over they close the area off until the next work day. This gives the feeling of going to work every day even when you don't leave the house.

If you and your employer have decided that working out of the house is the right option for you, then as you get started, be aware it may take you a few weeks to get into a good routine. Find a good balance that works for you, setting work hours for each day and fitting tasks around the house in as you did when you worked in an office outside the home. As you are able to balance work and home life in the same space, earning money at home can be a true blessing!
