Almost a year ago today, my wife and I moved into our first house. It's a nice little place in a new development. A new construction home has its benefits, but one of the downsides is that the lawn is new too. Of course, we got construction grade seed in construction grade soil, and all the headaches that have since come with it.
Within a few months, we had a little bit of grass and a lot of weeds. At least they were green, but that wasn't acceptable. The weeds spread fast, and grew even faster, needing to be mowed up to three times a week just to keep them reasonable under control.
Most of our neighbors, who had a different builder, had sod laid down for them. At this point, those lawns looked great. Nice, short, manageable, green grass. You may have often heard that, in the end, a seeded lawn can look better than a sodded lawn. However, unless you're in the mood to do a lot of hard work for the first couple years, you're better off just going with the sod, which will look nearly as good and be much easier to maintain.
I did eventually get my seeded lawn relatively under control. The first step was hiring a company to spray for weeds every couple months, which made a huge difference. I then aerated and over-seeded the lawn (in the fall, of course), and things are looking much better. However, I still have to mow the lawn at least twice a week, and the grass grows much faster than the sodded lawns nearby, which seem to require much less maintenance.
So, if you're looking to put in a lot of hard work and get the best looking lawn possible, a seeded lawn may be right for you. However, if you're an average joe that wants a good looking lawn with only a fair amount of work, and have the money to do so, investing in some quality sod is a great idea.
