The Person I Most Dreaded

I knew my new pets would cause a stir, and because I did not have the energy to be courageous that morning, I took Mr. Kangar and Mrs. Roo in by the back way and there, of course, I met the person I most dreaded - my sister!
"Now what," said Katy, "have ye there?"
"Nothing at all-that is-well-nothing of interest to you. I'm certain of that," I replied
"Is it a prairie dog?"
"Katy, I couldn't!"
"Hmm-or one of thim pole cats?"
"Oh, no!"
"A birrrd?"
"Katy, it's a pair of the most precious little creatures that you ever saw. You'll adore them."
Katy was dubious but in sudden kindness she hunted u p the box that long ago Cutie, the prairie dog, occupied. An icebox shelf was again to serve for a lid. I gently lifted Mr. Kangar and Mrs. Roo into their new home.
"Rats," wailed Katy, "Almost rats anyway. I won't live in the same house with 'em!"
Mother rushed in to see what was the matter.
"They or me leaves," affirmed Katy. But mother quieted Katy in her miraculous way and the regime of the kangaroo rats began.

By evening everyone except Dad had fallen in love with Mr. Kangar and Mrs. Roo-even, wonder of wonders, the cook.
"The darlin's," she crooned. "It's a shame to call ye by such an abnoxious name as rat. Little faery things ye are, every bit of ye." And she put in her big hand land stroked Mr. Kangar's gossamer fur. Even little brother brought the Boy Scout troop over to see Mr. Kangar and Mrs. Roo. They spoke in whispers, afraid lest they frighten, such elfin creatures. But Mr. Kangar and Mrs. Roo were bored by all this attention. They let it be clearly understood that they were sleepy. Hadn't their fathers and all their great grandfathers slept in the daytime? And here these absurd giants were keeping them awake. So Mr. Kangar and Mrs. Roo huddled in the darkest corner and dozed.

When I put straw in their box they leveled it all down with their little white paws and then slept again. The next day I coaxed Mrs. Roo and then Mr. Kangar to eat grain from my hand. They filled their cheek pouches till they bulged making their heads bigger around than their bodies. Their fore paws worked so fast getting the grain that they were only a blur.
