The Perfect Fly Fishing Trip

Expert Author Greg Garner

If you enjoy fishing for trout then you want to plan a trip to the trout capital of Georgia. In the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are a number of great spots for testing your skill that are stocked regularly to make sure that your adventure is a satisfying one. In addition to the fine fishing, you will enjoy amazing views and spectacular scenery that will make the experience an unforgettable one.

The Toccoa River is the place to start. The best spot is right above Blue Ridge where trout are stocked every two weeks during trout season. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources publishes a trout fishing guide every year and recommends several other spots along the river for catching big fish. Shallowford Bridge which is also above the dam is a catch and release location. Below the dam, Tammen Park is a favorite location along with Horseshoe Bend Park, just watch for high water when the dam is opened up.

There are a number of smaller rivers in the Cohutta Wilderness Area of the Blue Ridge Mountains which provide excellent opportunities for fly fishing as well. Jacks River is open for trout fishing from March to October and the rugged trails will truly make you feel like you are getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Conasauga River can be fished year round and is ninety miles long. The section of the river that flows through the wilderness area is consistently listed as one of the top 100 trout fishing streams in America.

Noontootla Creek is another popular spot for trout fishing inside the Cohutta Wilderness area. It does not get fished as much as some of the other areas and holds a number of trophy fish. If you catch one that is 16 inches or longer it is a keeper but all others must be released back into the river. This area inside the Blue Ride Wildlife Management Area is a little tougher to reach but the hike to the remote area could be quite rewarding. A complete trout fishing guide is available at the welcome center when you enter the city of Blue Ridge in Georgia which will be the launching point for your adventure.
