I have recently set up my own creative 'agency'. Ok, it's not exactly an agency, it is me and a friend, he's the designer and I'm the copywriter... and we have one client. So perhaps to call us an agency would be gilding the lilly, but one day we will be.
Anyhow, our client has been communicating with us mainly through emails, which has been fine, but we got to the point where we needed to meet. I couldn't really invite them to our pokey little flat so I started looking at renting conference venues in Newcastle. Everything was looking pretty expensive or pretty shabby; I couldn't find a happy medium.
A friend of mine told me about a new business exchange on the outskirts of Newcastle, so I got in touch with them. Ideal. They had a 'creativity suite' for informal gatherings which was perfect for this initial stage of meetings. They also gave us a great rate as we were a start up business and would be using them in the future.
We had two meetings in the creativity suit and our client was very happy with our work and ideas and they asked if we would present the idea to their board members. Of course we agreed and were honoured. They wanted us to arrange the venue and the details, which really is not part of our remit, but what do you do? You do it - they are the clients!
Instead of searching for conference room hire in Newcastle, I knew exactly where we would be meeting. We spoke to the team at the business centre and they arranged everything for us - venue, layout, food, refreshments. We just had to turn up.
It was an excellent event and won us a fairly lucrative contract, not big enough for us to get our own offices, but we don't need them with these amazing conference room facilities in Newcastle on our doorstep. I think the next step for us will be a virtual office and then who knows after that! The sky's the limit!
