The United States is on the edge of an economy meltdown, with this in mind people need financial education now more than ever.
Lets compare 1970 to today and see how this plays out. savings rates have dropped to zero from 11% of take home pay in 1970, even as the family added Mom as a breadwinner. Taxes are up sharply due to the second income, child care and car related expenses. American's keep a car more than two years longer than they did 30 to 40 years ago, but they now need two cars to get to two jobs. we now live in a country where there is no financial margin for most families to fall back on incase of sickness or job loss. The average family is about 3 months away from bankruptcy.
These fixed expenses cost the median family 75% of its two earner income. In 1970, they cost 50% of one earner's. You add a huge energy crisis and see the concrete crack....WOW! It makes you think a little about what is really happening to us.
Washington says the economy is still growing; why are so many people out of work--despite the fact that Washington claims unemployment is still low. Washington claims money supply growth is low--despite the hundreds of billions of new dollars it's creating to bail out banks and brokers. Finally, Washington is lying about consumer price inflation, reportedly on 4.2% a year, even while average inflation is 11.8%. What I'm getting at is you'll have to earn twice as much in 8 years to maintain today's standard of living.
