The Origins of Coffee Enemas and Their Relation to Gerson Therapy

Expert Author Nate B R

Where on earth does the idea of a coffee enema come from? Those hippies are willing to do anything aren't they? The origin of coffee enemas is not so random, but not at all scientific either. Gerson Therapy has helped to increase the popularity of coffee enemas in recent years, but the origins go further back.

Enemas have a long history in medical science - I won't delve into that. Coffee enemas - not so long but about 50 years or so. Near the end of world war two, as supplies were running low, especially things like painkillers and medicine to ease the pain of the soldiers, enemas began being used as a form a therapy to relieve pain. Who wouldn't feel better having some warm water rushing up your bum? But seriously, it worked and was in common practice. Legend has it that even fresh water was becoming hard to find so a clever nurse, in dire need of administering an enema to a patient reached for the nearest warm liquid available - coffee. The patient got a shot of caffeine (because it is more easily absorbed into the walls of the intestine) and therefore showed signs improvement of mood, energy and therefore overall condition. Coffee enemas became the enema of choice. But the science of coffee enemas didn't come until later.

A German scientist named Max Gerson (the creater of Gerson Therapy) as a physician became involved in cancer research after his migraine cure was found to also cure skin teburculosis, lung teburculosis, and Type II diabetes. He later developed these cures and eventually developed Gerson Therapy as a means of treating many diseases as well as curing cancer. Coffee enemas played a large role in Gerson Therapy. Regardless of such amazing results, Gerson Therapy is a subject for heated discussion. As with many forms of alternative medicine, Gerson's claims that he can cure cancer are refuted by many institutions and the advertisement of Gerson therapy is prohibited in the USA. He claims to have cured 50 patients himself, and many more that use Gerson's therapy talk about the positive sides of it as an alternative treatment for cancer. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) states that Gerson's records do not provide thorough enough information to support his claims. They state that Gerson therapy has not been proven to cure cancer or have any positive affect at all on cancer patients. Regardless, many still choose to follow his therapy as an alternative to chemo therapy, which itself has many shortcomings as a "cure" for cancer.

At the very least it Gerson makes us realize how many poisons we unwittingly put into our bodies every day. Sometimes even just a diet change can make our chronic illnesses disappear, and can even cure more life threatening diseases. Diseases such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and many other degenerative diseases can be healed. Simply speaking it is a diet made of natural foods that break down diseased tissue in the body. In addition, enemas aid in eliminating the lifelong buildup of toxins from the liver and intestines.

Coffee enemas are specifically used because coffee contains palmitates, which can greatly increase the detoxification process. Caffeine stimulates the liver and production of bile which is also known to carry away toxins through the intestines.
