The East India Company constructed one of the oldest remnants of the colourful history of Macau, the Old Protestant Cemetery Macau during the early 18th century. The cemetery that is now considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO was constructed due to the lack of burial site for Protestants of the Macau colony, which was monopolised by the Catholic Portuguese community.

The need for a burial site dedicated was found a necessity because Portuguese considered Macau to be sacred Roman Catholic ground and thus did not allow the burial of resident Protestants. Because of this matter, burials were carried out in secret in the dead of the night, in the ground between the city walls and barrier gate. This matter was resolved after the death of the wife of Robert Morrison. Robert Morrison a noted missionary and linguist from the nineteenth century was also a renowned dignitary in Macau. Due to the matter of burying his wife, in 1821 the Protestants received permission to purchase a plot of land in which The Old Protestant Cemetery lies today.

Many of the burials, which were carried out prior to 1821, were later moved to Old Protestant Cemetery, thus accounting for dates on graves date back beyond the founding date. The cemetery closed down in 1858 after achieving its maximum capacity, thus being referred as the "Old" Protestant Cemetery.

The final resting place for a number of noted Macau residents, the cemetery is home to Robert Morrison and his wife, Royal Navy Captain Henry John Spencer-Churchill an ancestor of Sir Winston Churchill and US Naval Lieutenant Joseph Harod Adams who is the grandson of the 2nd president of the United States of America John Adams. Neighbouring the Old Protestant Cemetery the Morrison Chapel can be found which was interred as a memorial for Robert Morrison. This Macau Protestant Chapel is an evangelistic house of Prayer for All Nations.

Take time to view the many serene and peaceful graves of the Protestants of Macau as you walk though the shady walkways of the Old Protestant Cemetery. Make sure to visit this piece of Macau history while staying within the comforts of a luxury hotel in Macau. A hotel offering luxury accommodation is the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel, which provides cosy and comfortable rooms and suites for guest to dwell in utmost comfort and warmth.
