The Neapolitan Mastiff is a massive and very powerful dog. And they have the biggest darn head you have ever seen. I'm not kidding here, it is huge.
Like most of the Mastiff breeds, the Neapolitan is a gentle and easy-going dog that is good with children and other dogs. They are accepting of most strangers as long as they don't feel threatened and generally get along with all other household animals.
The are dependable watchdogs and should intimidate all but the most foolhardy attacker just by looks alone.
Appearance of the Neapolitan Mastiff
Did I mention the massively large head? Okay.
The Neapolitan has a short, smooth and dense coat that is generally grey or black. Tan and mahogany are also common. They may have small white patches on the chest and tips of the toes.
Their skin is typically loose and saggy, forming wrinkles all over the body. But especially on that huge head, where the wrinkles form folds and pendulous lips.
They grow to 25 - 31 inches tall and can weigh an impressive 110 to 180 pounds. Head included.
Grooming and Exercise Needs
The wrinkles on the face need to be cleaned daily to maintain health. Otherwise a weekly brushing is sufficient.
A daily walk around the block is considered an intense workout for this breed.
A healthy Neapolitan will live for 8 - 10 years.
They can be world-class droolers.
Origins of the Neapolitan Mastiff
Mastiffs have been known in Europe and Asia for thousands of years but little is known about their origins. The Neapolitan descended from these early examples as did all the Mastiff breeds. Generally they have been used for hunting, guarding and fighting.
