Mechanism description. Used to explain the arrangement and shape of an object in space, this involves identifying and describing an object, listing its functions, provide an account of how it works and describe each of its principal parts. Process description. Used to describe a procedure or a set of instructions, it details the sequence of actions to be performed in chronological order. Aside from the step-by-step account, it's also appropriate to write down who should be doing each action and what each is meant to accomplish.
Classification and partition. Similar in many ways, both of these can be used to provide a detailed account of an object. In classification, you divide things based on similarities and differences; in partition, you group component parts, according to how they look and how they work.
Situation-problem-solution-evaluation. Used to show the thinking process behind a solution, this is a major writing structure applied in many fields. As you can guess from the name, your job is to describe the situation, analyze the specific problem being faced, establish methods for solving it, detail a solution plain and explain how the solution effectively addresses the main problem.
