The Most Effective Networking Seen in a Long Time

Expert Author Sam Borrett

The new Prime Minister of Australia has just learned a very valuable lesson about networking from her recent appointment to the post. Her name is Julia Gillard and she has found out in no uncertain way the power of networking.

The ex-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was one of the most popular politicians in Australia's history but lacked the power to network. He was like a Chine Emperor and strangely also spoke Mandarin.

In the olden days, a king would marry many women, hundreds, and sometimes thousands, all in an endeavour to make friends with the other Kings or Emperors; it was part of politics: he would marry the daughter of anyone so that he could create a network of power relationships.

Of course Kevin Rudd could not do this and forgot that it is networks that run politics because politics is concerned only with power, not with serving the people although they talk that way.
Within a few days and to be specific more like 24 hours the Emperor had no clothes and was naked on the scrap heap with only his wife, three children and one other loyal minister who will resign soon.

Julia Gillard by using the power of networking removed him from power so quickly everybody's head is swimming. The rest of his followers jumped ship and now are happily sailing on the good ship Lollipop which is being run with a newly inspired sense of confidence, passion and purpose....blah, blah, blah and all in the name of serving the good working class Australians, yes right!

If the former Prime Minister could have networked, been less proud, collaborated, consulted and conferred with others he may well have stayed the course for a very long time. Sure there were many problems and challenges as we all have to face every day but if I am still here and there are problems I will solve them, why not him.

It's always a joy to solve a problem, it gives a challenge. You take the challenge and you move in it, and when you solve it a great release of happiness happens. The problem is we forget that and make a problem out of a problem rather than remembering the joy that goes with solving a problem and we all have done it many times.

If Kevin Rudd had remembered that together we thrive and alone we die he would have risen on the back of an incredible popularity surge the likes of which we only glimpsed when he took power three years ago.

He went it alone and failed so spectacularly that Australians are still coming to terms with it, because it could happen to anyone, particularly if you have a high handed, autocratic approach to running your business or enterprise.

Of course in the personal realm things are somewhat different. The body needs togetherness; and your innermost soul needs aloneness. That is the problem. The body needs crowds, warmth, clubs, groups, networks and friends and whenever we are with a lot of people or at a party or gathering you too must have noticed that the feeling of self consciousness disappears for a moment.

What is more, when you get home you feel rejuvenated and refreshed and say what a great time you had even when you didn't want to go at all in the first place and your woman or man or business partner had to nag you to go.

The soul feeds on aloneness, the body loves togetherness so as long as we can remember this we will not become miserable, lonely and wonder why. If you do sometimes wonder why, and who has not, then remember the soul needs time alone.

My partner flew off to Europe this morning and I am missing her already. It is this paradox of life that contains the opposites that makes Life so rich. If we can understand this paradox and better still embrace it our lives will be blessed.
