My senior mom, my sweet grandchildren, my trusty and easy to use digital camera, and I have been having so much fun over the summer with our Sunflower House! What is a Sunflower House, you ask? Let me tell you about it!
We bought and had fun planting sunflowers from seeds. (If you want to know how to grow big sunflowers, buy the Mammoth Sunflower seeds. Most of our Sunflowers are the Mammoth and they are so TALL and so BIG and SO BEAUTIFUL!). We planted the seeds in a circle in the back yard. We could have done a square, or any other shape. The goal is to have them become a "house" for the grand children when they are grown.
We planted two of the Sunflower House projects - one at my grandkids house and one at mine. Theirs didn't survive. I suspect we put too few seeds in and didn't dig them quite deep enough. Mine did great. Primarily because it was in new soil and my senior mom included it in her gardening projects and has watered it daily! I REALLY appreciate my senior mom!
A few weeks later, and my grandkids, my senior mom and I were so thrilled! The Sunflower House was growing wonderfully. They loved going in and out of it and playing with their little toys in it. We did have to watch for ants and buggies. Usually a good watering took care of those.
Now, summer is waning and fall is approaching. Summer storms have come and gone. Most of the Sunflower House is still standing strong and lovely, but a couple have fallen to the ground in windstorms. We put those over to the side, and were delighted when we found that the lovely Kentucky Red Northern Cardinal birds, along with other bird friends and squirrels have been sharing in our Sunflower pleasure.
All in all, this has been one of our favorite spring, summer, and autumn activities for all us - from senior mom to sweet grand kids! We've enjoyed reading books about the process, we've been intrigued watching cute wind-surfing bees, and we've even turned some Sunflower seeds into a fun art project. And it's all been recorded with the wonderful help of my easy to use digital camera. (I just love how easy it is to use and how GOOD it makes this Granny Nanny look!)
