The Lure Of Backpacking

Expert Author Abby Butler

To some, the thought of backpacking conjures up no other visual or emotional images than that of a heavy pack, aching muscles and a pervasive, cantankerous atmosphere rife with complaints and short tempers. While I am sure that such images have their counterparts in reality, I suspect they are the exception, raised to life by unfortunate souls pressed into service against their wills or who foolishly embark on a hike without much thought as to their selection of gear or companions.

I think that somewhere in the DNA of every most folks there exists a longing to experience nature to a degree where you become more than a spectator. Instead of being a mere observer of nature, you enjoy being a part of it, interacting with nature and finding yourself learning lesson after lesson from her. Lessons that cover a surprisingly wide range of topics from botany to human-and even Divine-relationships. For nature is God's spokesperson and has much to say to us about Him.

There is also a keen sense of independence in backpacking. You carry with you the basic elements needed to set up house wherever you find yourself. Food, clothing and shelter all nestle within the pack upon your back. No matter the weather, be it rain, snow or a blissfully sunny day with perfect temperature and a refreshing breeze, together with your backpack you have all you need to see you through your journey.

At the start of your day, you find yourself engrossed in your surroundings, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the world around you. Every now and then you take a break, perhaps one that includes a hot cup of coffee or tea together with your favorite trail mix.

Nighttime finds you welcoming the opportunity to relax. You set up your tent and lay out a mattress pad and sleeping bag. Your camp stove comes to life and soon you're smelling the aroma of a savory stew.

Dinner is a leisurely affair with plenty of time for conversation and laughter. Talk comes easily and you find yourself drawing closer to your companions because you're sharing a common experience together. A mystical one that, with the exception of the gear, hasn't changed all that much since time began.

Perhaps this is the greatest allure of all: that in backpacking we find ourselves a part of the continuity of human history. We become kindred nomads living on this wondrous orb called Earth with its incredible variety of life, drawing close to the God who made us and the companions He has blessed us with.
