The Life and Times of Tiberius

If you read Shakespeare's The Tempest, you will find that the story is very similar to the story of Tiberius' life. Also, Tiberius' life was similar in some counts to that of his father, Augustus, who had the habit of getting himself involved in the private lives of people while still being a good ruler.

As a child, Tiberius was quite studious and this allowed him to get himself highly educated. Later on, Tiberius got married, but he lost his wife to a divorce and his brother died. It was Augustus who asked Tiberius to divorce his wife so that he could get married to another woman. However, the second marriage failed as his wife was an adulteress.

On Augustus' death, the Romans had great expectations from the next emperor. Also, like any other kingdom, Rome too was going through an unstable time as it usually happens after the demise of an emperor. There were some questions on whether Tiberius could live up to the expectations and follow the footsteps of his father. However, Tiberius showed his empire how capable he was and this was primarily because he had outstanding management skills. He ended up becoming a fair and benevolent ruler who the people loved and admired. He managed to bring happiness and prosperity to the kingdom.

Tiberius passed away in 37 AD and his successor was Caligula, who as we know was one of the most tyrannical emperors that Rome had every seen. As Tiberius aged, he did not pay that much attention to his people, and the emperor's duties were carried by a stand-in ruler named Tiberius Gellimus.
