Of all pastimes, learning how to keep bees has to be one of the most satisfying. The process of honeybees collecting nectar, reducing its water content and converting it into honey is one of nature's miracles. As a beekeeper you can be a part of this process and have a ready supply of delicious honey. Even with just a single hive it is likely that you will produce more than you need and will be able to supplement your income by selling your surplus to friends, family and neighbors. There are plenty of reasons for keeping bees, but here are my top 5.
- I guess the first reason for learning how to keep bees has to be the honey. Actually obtaining the honey from your hive can be a messy business, but it is certainly worth it. The taste of your own honey (perhaps enhanced by the knowledge that you produced it yourself) is far better than anything that you can buy. Most commercially produced honey is blended which of course affects its flavor. The flavor of your honey will be determined by what flowers are in your vicinity.
- The time commitment for beekeeping is not that great - the busiest time, as you would expect is during the summer when the bees are collecting nectar. You main task at this time is to ensure that the bees have sufficient space available in order to prevent them swarming. Towards the end of the summer is honey collecting time.
- The set up costs are affordable. You will, of course, need to buy some beekeeping equipment, but once you have done this there is not a great deal in terms on on-going costs. The main things you need are a beekeeping suit, a bee hive and a smoker.
- You can help to boost the world's bee population. It is generally accepted that the bee population is declining, although it is not clear why. Changes in agricultural practices are perhaps a contributory factor. By keeping bees, you can help, in your own small way, to boost the numbers of bees, and we all now how important they are in the pollination process.
- Finally, another reason for learning how to keep bees is that it is relatively straightforward once you have mastered the basics. It is important to establish a routine a stick to it. Your main tasks are maintaining your bee hive, ensuring that your bees remain healthy and mite free, taking steps to discourage swarming and, of course, collecting your honey.
There are many more reasons of course, but I hope that these have given you some inspiration to think about learning how to keep bees.
