Eating healthy, for most of us, is a journey, and every journey begins with one step. So, what is the first step?
For us, it was getting rid of soda pop. Most people realize that drinking soda pop isn't the best choice, but few people actually make the commitment to get rid of it.
It's an easy step to take because you simply quit buying it!
Now, I admit that it might be a little harder than that for those of us who are addicted to caffeine (I used to drink nearly 2 liters of Pepsi each day!), but with a little Ibuprofen, you can get through those caffeine withdrawal headaches with relative ease.
If you are not convinced that drinking soda is bad for you, let me share with you the following: (Please note, that I am not an expert, this information simply comes from research I have done)
1. The average can of soda contains 39 grams of sugars...most of it from high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Although some would try to convince us that HFCS is not unhealthy as a sweetener, some research shows that HFCS is directly related to obesity in our youth. Two other studies suggest that MANY products that contain HFCS are tainted with Mercury, a substance that is TOXIC to the human body. Read the full article about HFCS and Mercury found in USA Today by clicking HERE.
2. The consumption of carbonated beverages has been directly linked to reduced bone density and osteoporosis, in young people. This is due, in part, to the carbonation.
3. Carbonated beverages have little, to no, nutritional value. If you're going to be ingesting that many calories, perhaps it's a good idea to get at least some benefit from it...don't you think? Oh, if you don't believe me, just take a peek at the nutrition facts the next time you pick up a can of soda!
4. Soda doesn't quench your thirst! If you're thirsty, drink the beverage that is designed to satisfy your thirst...WATER! Yes, I admit that it can be a little bit of a challenge to go from a flavored drink to water, but in time, you'll find that nothing tastes quite as good as cool, clean water. In fact, my husband told me last night that the more he drinks water, the more he enjoys it!
When you take that first step and stop drinking soda pop, you'll not only save yourself empty calories, but you'll save money as well.
