The Industrial Town of Barrow-in-Furness - Cumbria

The location of Barrow-in-Furness - Cumbria is one that is very industrial. Forming about half of the total territory of the location of the Borough that is located in England. Some 60 miles to the north of Manchester and about 50 miles to the south of Carlisle. It is situated on the Furness peninsula, and can be found close to Morecambe Bay and also Irish Sea. Well over 200 miles to the north of London and only about sixty miles south of the border to Scotland.

Another location in this part of the world that has a ton of history around it. Once the Barrow was actually a small village that focused on fishing and some miners too. But once the industrial revolution came around it was made into a more industrial location. With the building of the rail iron ore could be transported into the area. Thus the location would become one where it would be smelted down to steel.

It was in the nineteenth century that this location would have the largest steelworks located in the world. Plus that steel that was produced would be put to yet another good use, in the building of ships. It would be there that many wonderful vessels would be built, and even some submarines.

Though after WWII this industry would be shut down, for the naval ships and subs that is. For those lovers of subs you may be delighted to find that all those Trident weapons were actually made in this location. Besides the industries of steel and shipbuilding you will know of this location as the spot where Furness Abbey is located.

That Abbey is actually the second wealthiest abbeys in the country. They have been behind many events that have come to this location. Including many sporting events and other things. The Cistercian monks would be the first to control this area during the Middle Ages, so it seems correct that the Abbey would be so wealthy being around so long!
