The Inconvenience of Exercise Vs the Inconvenience of Disease

Expert Author Carolyn Hansen

It is surprising that many people view exercise as 'optional' or something to be done if there is 'time left over' or if they 'feel like it'. Maybe they do not fully understand what happens to the human body when it does not get enough of it.

Our modern day lives are full of easy and convenient appliances and gadgets so we are unlikely to get enough activity to keep our body strong and healthy anymore. But somehow we pretend we do not really need it or it simply does not matter.

But what really happens when we allow our body to weaken? Unless we take some time each week to do a couple of intentional strength training sessions our muscles will diminish in their strength and become weak, flabby and start to shrivel.

Muscle is just the start of the deterioration caused by inactivity. The bones, heart and lungs, blood vessels, immune system, the brain, ability to use glucose along with mental and emotional health are all affected by not enough muscle building and maintaining activity. You are likely to become overweight; joints become stiff lose their ranges of movement and become easily injured and the risk of serious disease increases as the downward health spiral continues.

Yet only 8 out of 10 people bother with a proper exercise program. You are 40 percent more likely to get cancer and over 50 percent more likely to have heart disease without enough proper exercise but somehow none of these things scare people. That is until a medical diagnosis is delivered that can be life changing.

"Give me all the tests man, money is no object." "Give me the works, I don't want to die." Suddenly time and money is available that was not before. But surely prevention is so much easier than waiting till the wheels fall off. It may be inconvenient to have to go to the gym a couple of times each week, but how inconvenient is it to have a life threatening disease?

Imagine your life suddenly taken up with doctors, tests, drugs, waiting, treatments, hospital, surgery, stress, worry, fear, until finally the medical time bomb is under control - hopefully.

It costs so much less in every way to keep strong and fit than to risk illness and disease. The cost of inactivity is not a cost that most of us can afford. It is easier to budget for some workout clothes, quality unprocessed foods and a gym membership than a wheel-chair and a nurse.

The power of healthy eating and proper exercise is so great it can transform human bodies from the inside out, restoring strength, rejuvenating health, increasing energy and vitality, improving physical function for everyday tasks and activities, and fending off illness, disease and injury.

Do not allow a sedentary lifestyle and inactivity to erode your most precious possession - your health. You want to hang on to that passionately for your whole lifespan. We each need to take it upon ourselves to stay strong and fit throughout our life to protect our future.
