Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most commonly occurring repetitive strain injuries in the world today. Working on the computer too much is often to blame, but that 's not the only way you get this syndrome. Any repetitive movement of the hands and wrist done for extended periods of time can cause it.
Though office workers are often thought of as sufferers of CTS, it is also common among people in other professions. Machinists, hairdressers, massage therapists and even musicians can get this condition.
In the early stages, you may notice some tingling in your hands while performing certain tasks. Eventually, the tingling will be present even when you're not performing the task. The tingling leads to numbness. Pain in the wrists and forearms is another symptom. These symptoms often become more pronounced at night and may even wake you up from sleeping.
These symptoms can be scary. Many people associate them with the fear of losing their jobs and being forced to look for a new career. I know that feeling because I've had it before too.
Your first instinct may be to ignore it hoping it will go away. I'm sorry to tell you that won't work. If you ignore the symptoms of CTS they'll only get worse. You'll eventually loose your grip strength as the muscles in your hands atrophy. You need to do something to facilitate your healing. That's the only way you'll get better.
Carpal tunnel syndrome happens because the median nerve that runs down from the neck to the hand is pinched. When this nerve is pinched it causes numbness and tingling. Most people assume that the nerve is pinched in the carpal tunnel (a narrow tunnel in the wrist that the median nerve and tendons run through). The nerve can also become pinched at any point down the neck, in the shoulder or down the arm causing your symptoms. It can even be pinched in multiple locations.
If your CTS is quite bad I'd recommend that you start out by doing some simple stretches to loosen the muscles in you neck, shoulders and arms. Once your symptoms start to go away you can start doing some self-massage to further facilitate healing. Self-massage can be used to loosen the muscles at all points the nerve travels through.
That's not all you should do though. Changing your work environment to make it more ergonomic will also help you heal. You don't have to change jobs just look at your set up and see what you can do to improve it.
Experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome can be scary, but if you know what to do you don't have to worry. You just have to take the actions necessary to put you on the path to healing.
