The History of Sinus Irrigation

Expert Author Tommy Kas

In the last couple years, the popularity of the neti pot has exploded. It has been promoted heavily in the media and featured in many magazines, newspapers as well as numerous websites. If you are interested in buying a neti pot yourself, it might ease your mind to learn a bit to understand its long history as well. We all strive to collect as much information as we can, in order to produce an educated decision regarding our health.

Indian yoga practitioners have been using the neti pot for no less than a millennium. The process of nose rinsing is an ancient technique that has withstood the tests of time quite nicely. When introduced in the United States around the seventies, it was brought here by the yoga circles who actually used the device as a meditation tool. Even after yoga's popularity raised it out of being an obscure hobby into the mainstream, alternative cultures and medics continued to promote the neti. For example, it can now be found as a part of Ayurvedic medicine.

Nasal lavage, commonly known as nasal irrigation is used not only as means of personal hygiene, but also to improve certain aspects of ones health. Since the saline solution flushes out all impurities out of your nose and sinuses, it keeps your nasal cavity clean. This prevents and calms many different diseases and symptoms related to the common cold, allergies, and even headaches. This is done through consecutive use, and can easily be included into a person's daily routine. The number of flushing that should be done daily will directly correlate with the level of symptoms that a subject is exhibiting.

The Neti itself looks like the magic lamp from Arabian nights and can be manufactured out of plastic, ceramic, stainless steel, copper, and glass. Which material you chose is really up to you, but most of the users are torn between the ceramic and stainless makes for various reasons. It is designed to make the nose rinsing process easier and can come with an attachable tip to make it less messy.

The Neti is filled with a solution that is usually a mix of warm saline, or salt water with other gentle additives. Many manufacturers offer these, and can be found in any department stores as well as online. I have tried many and have a few favorites. The main distinction between them is their size as some come in bulk, as opposed to individual packets. The small ones are great for trips, and travel in general.

There are a few techniques used when it comes to performing the actual nose rinsing. I have tried many of them, and have found that some can be better than others. My main concern is that due to some of the more advanced sinus irrigators there are a few dangers involved. To keep it kosher, I think the neti process should rely on pure gravity and not motors or pumps to push the water through the nostrils.
