A certain train lover may have a beautiful garden outdoors through which they would like to run a model train. Someone else may have lots of open area to set up some large train tracks; while another person may not have much space to work with, but they'd like to run several trains through it. It is for just these varying purposes that train manufacturers have created several sizes of model trains from which to choose.
O scale is the most popular of large scale trains. The scale for this model is 1/48th. This translates into it being one 48th of the size of a real train. 1 1/4 inches is the gauge for an O scale model. These large trains can usually be spotted outside in gardens or other novelty spaces. However, one size does not fit all.
An HO model train gauge is half the size of the O scale. It stands for "Half of O." The scale for an HO model train is 1/87. A standard gauge is 16.5mm, and this is what is used for HO trains. Layouts often feature the HO scale train because of its size. Using a reasonable amount of space, different kinds of scenery can be laid out with a track that is planned out with that amount of space in mind. In addition, they can be meticulously detailed because they are large enough for the details to be seen and appreciated. But their size prevents the problem of tiny parts or actual components of the train being harmed if children wish to play with them. When compared to other scales of model trains, the HO model train scale is quite versatile because it seamlessly blends the details available in large scales with the lesser space requirements of small scales.
