The Growing Trend For Skin Care For Men

Ask most people their opinions on moisturising creams and they generally jump to the conclusion that you are talking about products for women. After all, over the last 50 years this has been the traditional market for cosmetics. Yet in the last 10 years there has been a growing number of products, such as the Zirh Skin Care for Men range, which are specifically targeted at the male consumer. Some consider that this is a new development, but is it?

If we consider the natural world then male grooming and the male desire to look good is as old as nature itself. In the wild it is the male of the species that makes the special effort to look good in order to attract a mate.

With peacocks for instance, it is the male that dresses in all the finery and a striking appearance whilst the females are rather drab in comparison. It is not just in the bird species that this happens. The male lion has the glorious mane, not the female. In fact, in lions this has been taken to an extreme as thanks to his showiness he is more conspicuous and so the male is a relatively poor hunter compared to the female. The male stag also produces amazing sets of antlers, which are there not just to allow it to compete with other males but to look impressive to the females.

It is therefore perfectly natural for males to want to look their best. This desire has perhaps particularly grown with the advent of the celebrity culture. From the beginnings of mass media and the advent of the film star we have all looked to these personalities as our role models. With women this was always about glamour. With men though, it was the tough hero, particularly in westerns and war films. This set a standard of ruggedness with personal grooming way down on the list of priorities. No one was concerned if John Wayne or Bruce Willis used moisturiser, but with a move to gentler story lines with stars such as Orlando Bloom and Robert Pattinson, the metrosexual male was born. Here the image of the male star was as important as that of the female.

With this has come an increase in products to specifically meet this demand, such as the Korres natural products range which uses plant extracts and the Yu-Be moisturizing skin cream range. Male grooming has therefore perhaps regained its rightful natural role.
