When it comes to movies about boxing, it seems there are more masterpieces than duds. Why is this? Unlike most films involving athletics, boxing is an individual sport, where the athlete will either prosper or perish. There seems to be a sense of identifying with the main character in boxing movies.
But which boxing films are the best? The following are my favorite boxing films of all time.
When I think about boxing movies, the first one that jumps in my head is Rocky. The original Rocky tapped into the souls of Americans and defined the cinematic American underdog for a generation.
A list of movies about boxing could not be compiled without mentioned Martin Scorcese's masterpiece, Raging Bull. This is a classic film and Both Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci give stellar performances.
Another film that is on my list of favorites (boxing related or not) is Million Dollar Baby. This is my favorite Clint Eastwood directed film, and Hillary Swank knocks it out of the park as the lead role. Morgan Freeman also is amazing in this film.
Cinderella Man is a Ron Howard film, which stars Russell Crowe as the true life boxer James Braddock, a washed up legend during the 1920s who became the peoples champion as he attempted to fight amongst the struggles of the Great Depression.
Based on the legendary boxer of the same name, Ali is based on the true life stories of Muhammed Ali and his boxing career. While it may not have lived up to the expectations of most, I found a lot to like about this movie.
As it stands, this is my list. But of course, there is always room for another Rocky film! I am also holding out hope for Mark Wahlberg's new film, The Fighter, which also stars the always great Christian Bale.
